Give Plastic the Sack

Creative Direction // Print Collateral // Sustainable Bag Design

The city of Steamboat Springs worked with Stand to design a logo, tagline, campaign, and bag designs for their effort to eliminate the use of one-time use plastic bags at large grocery stores in the city and replace them with reusable sacks. Working together with the Teen Council and other sustainability organizations, the ‘Give Plastic the Sack’ ordinance took effect October 1, 2019.

Brand Logo

The logo was created to blend Steamboat’s western roots with the youth of the Teen Council, help lighten the tone of this, and future, sustainability initiatives, and show that the many facets of Steamboat’s population can work together to make a difference. We kept these elements in mind while incorporating the key direction to include the iconic spur in the the City of Steamboat Springs’ logo.

Print Collateral & Tagline

Give Plastic the Sack. Get it? We think change is always better with a side of humor. We continued to push the use mixed fonts in the Spur Change logo into the tagline. We kept the tie to the City by using their dark blue brand color as the main color of all print-collateral. The flyer and the postcard served as both informational pieces as well as functionally. The postcard, mailed to all residents, was a coupon redeemable for one free bag of their choice to help make the transition to reusable sacks easier.

Reusable Bag Design

We wanted to highlight the various cultures and activities in the Yampa Valley – the fun and vitality of the Yampa River, the mountain activities in both summer and winter, and also the rich ranching heritage that continues to be an important element of Steamboat today. Our aim was to allow each walk of life to take ownership of the bag initiative.
